German Pinschers need to be trained at a young age to be acceptable companions in the family. I begin early to train my puppies not to pee/poop in my house, accept crating (without fussing in the house or when traveling in the car) -- live in the house with us (without destroying its contents) -- walk on a leash (without acting like a bucking-bronco). I have gotten 5 AKC Canine Good Citizen titles on my dogs, and all of them can go out, in public, as ambassadors for their breed. The German Pinschers are so very intelligent, that some require more work than others to avoid or correct problem behavior.
Dogs are "pack" animals, and look up to the "alpha" dog/bitch/human in their pack. German Pinschers tend to be a little stronger-willed than a Lab or a border-collie -- and if you aren't the "boss," they will willingly and quickly take over that role. Even if you haven't gotten that cute little furbaby yet, I would highly recommend reading some of the following URLs on how to raise a puppy, or even an older dog.
I am adding a bibliography of good training books. All of us respond to external stimulus or "cues" in our environment. All you have to do, is find the appropriate reinforcements to encourage repetition of the response or behavior you want. Remember, positive training is always easier than trying to correct problem behavior. Dogs can be loving, loyal, and obedient companions. All it takes is love, patience, timing, and consistency in molding the desired behavior. Read some of the following sources... and enjoy your companions.
If you have any good training books or other URL links, that I've missed, please notify me at webmaster@germanpinschers.com. Caring for & Raising a Puppy or Dog
